Neural Circuits: Interacting Interneurons Regulate Fear Learning
نویسندگان
چکیده
A recent study has found that, during associative fear learning, different sensory stimuli activate subsets of inhibitory interneurons in distinct ways to dynamically regulate glutamatergic neural activity and behavioral memory formation.

Amygdala Inhibitory Circuits Regulate Associative Fear Conditioning
Associative memory formation is essential for an animal's survival by ensuring adaptive behavioral responses in an ever-changing environment. This is particularly important under conditions of immediate threats such as in fear learning. One of the key brain regions involved in associative fear learning is the amygdala. The basolateral amygdala is the main entry site for sensory information to t...

It is essential to rapidly learn and unfailingly remember threats in the environment. It is equally important to learn when those threats have passed, as well as the unique contexts in which one is safe from threat. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in understanding the neural circuits and molecular mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of fear memory in the mammalian brai...
متن کاملSerotonin, Amygdala and Fear: Assembling the Puzzle
The fear circuitry orchestrates defense mechanisms in response to environmental threats. This circuitry is evolutionarily crucial for survival, but its dysregulation is thought to play a major role in the pathophysiology of psychiatric conditions in humans. The amygdala is a key player in the processing of fear. This brain area is prominently modulated by the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydro...
متن کاملControlling the elements: an optogenetic approach to understanding the neural circuits of fear.
Neural circuits underlie our ability to interact in the world and to learn adaptively from experience. Understanding neural circuits and how circuit structure gives rise to neural firing patterns or computations is fundamental to our understanding of human experience and behavior. Fear conditioning is a powerful model system in which to study neural circuits and information processing and relat...
متن کاملCompensation in the neural circuitry of fear conditioning awakens learning circuits in the bed nuclei of the stria terminalis.
The basolateral amygdala (BLA) is thought to be essential for fear learning. However, extensive training can overcome the loss of conditional fear evident following lesions and inactivation of the BLA. Such results suggest the existence of a primary BLA-dependent and a compensatory BLA-independent neural circuit. We tested the hypothesis that the bed nuclei of the stria terminalis (BST) provide...
